The Rainbow Book

How small can a book be? Or how big can it get? In a library far from here or there, in between somewhere and nowhere, there is a book that everybody wants. Especially those who read and even those who don’t read want it because it’s a rainbow book.

Cedric and Lucy were brothers and sisters. They loved chasing rainbows because they wanted the pot of gold at its end. Their friends say there is no pot of gold and its true. Until one day Cedric and Lucy saw a rainbow outside their window. It began just at the edge of their garden and stretched deep into the woods near their house.

They call out to their parents that there’s a rainbow and they zoom out of the house to chase it before it’s gone. They had to prove it to their friends it was real and once they got their gold, they were going to buy many chocolate bars and share it with their friends.

“Come on Cedric, we got to go faster!” shouts Lucy a few trees ahead.

“I can see the pot of gold!” She screams in excitement.

However, it was not a pot of gold they found. It was a tiny little rainbow book wide open, and the rainbow was streaming from inside it.

“What is it?” Cedric pokes it with a twig.

At the touch of the twig, the rainbow book begins to unravel turning into a giant rainbow corridor in the middle of the woods. The walls colour mingled and merged together like a smudged rainbow and at the end of the hall was a bright pink door.

“I don’t like it.” Says Cedric stepping back pulling Lucy.

“The gold is probably inside so no one can just take it!” shouts Lucy in excitement pulling herself away from Cedric.

Lucy runs in, and Cedric follows hesitantly.

They walk down the bright corridor, and Lucy touches the walls, and it bounces like a ripple of water.

Cedric looks at the floor but their feet makes no imprint, it’s like they weren’t there at all.

Lucy tries to open the door, but there is no knob. She pushes it, and it doesn’t budge. Words start to appear on the door.

Here and There

Nowhere and Somewhere

And All In-between

Only the Keen

Can come Within

So their story can Begin

“Lucy pokes Cedric, I think it means you must want it too or else we can’t go in.”

Cedric rolls his eyes, “I can read too you know. I want to go in.”

A crystal doorknob materialises at his words, and without hesitation, Lucy opens the door.

Inside was no gold pot. No Basket of chocolate bars. No Cookies or an angry wicket witch. All they saw were two little rainbow books shimmering on a tall smooth glass boulder.

As they got closer towards the books, both start to change colour.

Through Lucy’s eyes, she saw herself flying atop a dragon with her hands in the air. She was wearing warrior armour. She peaks at Cedric’s book, but it doesn’t change. It’s just a mirage of colours swirling.

However, to Cedric, he saw himself as a giant robot with laser eyes and with a turbo hand that shoots out blasts of blue light.

They pick up their books, and the room begins to shake.

They run for the entrance as the walls begin to fade and lose colour. Gone were the bright colours replaced by plain grey concrete.

They reach the woods in the nick of time as the doorway pops into nothing.

Only the sound of the trees dancing with the wind and the chirping of birds singing along with the howl of a fox deeper in the woods.

Cedric and Lucy burst into laughter holding their new books.

They rush home and tell their parents who simply brush everything away as a fancy of their imagination.

They head to their room and open their individual books, but they are empty.

Gone were the dragon and the robot.

They flip and shuffle through the book, flipping through all the pages but there’s nothing.

Just before they give up, words begin to shimmer on their book in bright colours.

Your Story Begins Now

Then both Lucy and Cedric disappear, and their book pops open to the first page as their adventure in their worlds unfolds.
